Have you been learning how to sew but know that there are tricks that would make your life a little better? Or have you wanted to learn, but don’t know where to start? This is an introduction to the very basics of hand sewing techniques used in theatre and film. We are getting into the essentials of needle, thread, fabric, and basic hand sewn closures.
In this class we will cover:
How to thread a needle
When to wax thread
What is hand sewing thread vs. machine sewing thread
Thread length in hand sewing- and why its important!
Lock stitch vs. knots
Basic stitches: Running Stitch, Basting Stitch, Back Stitch, Cross Stitch, and if you are feeling bold, a Blind Hem Stitch!
Basic Closures: Buttons, Hook and Bar, and Snaps!
May 9, 2026 ✺ Machine Sewing Foundations
Now that you have been practicing your hand sewing techniques, its time to learn the very basics of machine sewing. Whether you are familiar, or a novice, this class will help you become more comfortable with sewing machines and their parts.
In this class we will cover:
The different types of machines found in our shop: Domestic single needle, industrial single needle, domestic overlock, and industrial overlock.
How to change thread in a sewing machine- when it is already threaded.
What to do if you accidentally unthread a machine you have never threaded???
How to change a bobbin.
How to thread a bobbin.
How to change a needle when it breaks.
What the different feet do on a machine and why you need them.
Preparing your fabric for machine sewing

Our workshops run about 2 hours and are capped to keep things personal. We cover everything from technical skills (quick alterations to aging and distressing) to career development (rate negotiation, union questions, building your kit). All levels are welcome - the only requirement is curiosity.
